French and French Studies

Welcome to the Francophone world in Sewanee! We are a friendly department of five, and we love French so much that we would welcome any chance to show you our enthusiasm for all things French-related: literature, culture, music, movies, food, and more! We are especially proud of our new in-house opportunity for our students to study in Paris (see our students' blog posts from the current and previous fall programs). On campus, you may practice your French in our classes, at the weekly Table Française (lunch on Mondays at McClurg Dining Hall, at the lovely Maison Française where students reside and where the Department sponsors Francophone programs, at the Sewanee Union Theater for occasional French movies, and in the hallways of Gailor Hall where you will hear us chattering away in the "langue de Molière."

The major in French and French Studies is an interdisciplinary program which examines the language, literature, history, culture, and society of France and of other Francophone countries. The minimum requirement for a major in French and French Studies is nine full courses beyond French 203, as prescribed in the College's Catalog.

High Demand for Teachers of French

The Southern Teachers Agency, the premier placement agency for private schools in the South since 1902, currently has an unprecedented number of mid-year openings that their schools are trying to fill as soon as possible. French majors should complete their online application now to become a candidate. The Southern Teachers’ Best of the South Job Fair on February 4 in Atlanta, GA. The fair is free for active candidates. To become “active,” candidates must complete the online application, be accepted by Southern Teachers, and interview with their Southern Teachers placement counselor by January 24. Students do not need a teaching license or education major to be considered. See more for active links.

Associated Alumni Honors Dr. Poe

This year, Dr. George Poe, recently retired from the French Department, the highest honor awarded a faculty or staff member by the Associated Alumni. It is given to a member of the faculty or staff who had demonstrated leadership and a sincere interest in the future well-being of the students of the University of the South and has been supportive of the Associated Alumni.

3rd Annual International Karaoke Night
November 8, 2017
Students, faculty, and community members got together for a fun night of international music, food, and culture. There were over 35 acts singing in 8 languages taught at Sewanee: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish! Judges awarded prizes to the 3 best solo and group acts.
