Students of Italian language and culture are highly encouraged to study abroad with one of Sewanee's affiliated programs in Italy. We have partnered with a variety of programs suited to students' various interests.
IES in Milan, Rome, and Siena
Students can choose from a wide selection of courses in language, literature, art history, economics, business, political science, anthropology, and history. IES pairs rigorous academics with internship opportunities and exciting excursions. No knowledge of Italian is required; advanced students can opt to take courses at an Italian university.
IPSL in Siena
In addition to language and cultural studies, students engage in service-learning projects (in education, healthcare, elder care, community organizing) and live with an Italian family. The program mirrors the Sewanee ethos of service and place-based learning.
C.V. Starr - Middlebury School in Italy
Advanced students of Italian who are independent and adventurous are encouraged to enroll in one of Middlebury's schools in Ferrara, Florence, or Rome. Students live with Italian families or university students and enroll directly in Italian universities. Courses range from philosophy to literature to biology.
Syracuse University in Florence
If you have to have Florence, take a look at Syracuse. Spend a semester or a year in the heart of the Italian Renaissance. No Italian prerequisite.
Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies
This program is tailored for serious students of the Classics. The curriculum includes Greek and Latin literature, archaeology, ancient history, art, and Italian language. No Italian language prerequisite.
UGA in Cortona
An excellent program for art students, with a curriculum focused on studio arts and art history. No Italian language prerequisite.
