Office of Marketing & Communications

The Office of Marketing & Communications helps tell Sewanee's stories—stories about our students, our programs, our alumni, and our people. These stories, well told, enhance the University's reputation, broaden its reach, support recruitment, and strengthen bonds with alumni, parents, our community, and indeed the world.

Primarily, the office plans and executes marketing projects for the admission offices at the School of Theology and the College of Arts and Sciences, and for University Advancement in support of University goals. The office also works with departments, programs, and University initiatives to promote Sewanee's truly distinctive offerings. Additionally, the office creates and distributes several University publications (print & electronic) and manages the University’s presence in traditional and social media.

Print design & production support

The office can help design and produce a variety of printed materials. From invitations to brochures to posters, we help develop a concept, produce copy/layout, and manage the production and mailing process.

Proofreading & graphic identity assessment

Materials intended for external audiences or for official University use, but developed without the office's involvement, must still be reviewed for style consistency and proper graphic usage. Please allow three business days for proofing and graphic identity assessment.


Website management, training, and support

The office manages most top-level pages on the University’s domain, while individual departments and programs are responsible for the content on their sites. The office provides access to and training on the University’s content management system, and monitors user experience, broken links, and site traffic.

News releases & media inquiries

The Office of Marketing and Communications is dedicated to sharing Sewanee news with the media and to helping journalists secure expert interviews, photographs, and other resources for stories. If you have a potential news story, please see the news release information below. Remember that academic departments can post news of specific interest to prospective students or to the campus community to the University website.

Sending a News Release

The Office of Marketing and Communications can help develop a strategy for sharing Sewanee news with the appropriate audiences and media outlets, and can produce and send news releases to publicize events, honors and awards.

  • For School of Theology events and stories, please contact Mary Ann Patterson at 931.598.1577.
  • For all other events and stories, please contact Laurie Saxton at 931.598.1896.
  • News releases are automatically sent out to hometown newspapers for recipients of Dean's List, Order of Gownsmen, awards, and other University honors.
Press Inquiries

All press inquiries should be directed or reported to the Office of Marketing & Communications. In most cases, the office will recommend a spokesperson to speak about specific issues or news. Review the University Media Relations Policy.

Photography services

Event Photography

Marketing & Communications provides photography support for events, people, and scenes if we expect to use those photos on the University website or in a University publication. If you need photos of a particular person or event for your office or department, we are happy to help connect you with a professional or student photographer. You will need to contact the photographer directly to schedule a shoot and pay for the photography.

Faculty and Staff Portraits

The office will provide portraits for members of the faculty, staff, and administration for display on department/office web pages and to publicize presentations, talks, and other events. We will periodically schedule sessions to take photos of new faculty and staff members as well as faculty and staff members whose photos have become outdated.

Requesting Images

The office maintains a large archive of digital photographs and color slides spanning the past ten years. Clients who are searching for a particular photograph may make an appointment to come to the office to browse through the collection; a cd can be burned with the selected photographs. Requests for photographs and artwork that require research may take up to a week. Contact Pamela Byerly for more information or to make an appointment.
